Music Has No Age Limit
For many musicians, the first experience of making music begins in a school band room. But graduating doesn't have to mean putting the instrument away.
The North Oakland Concert Band gives adult musicians the opportunity to continue performing, learning, and challenging themselves long after their school years have ended. Its approximately 80 members represent a variety of careers and musical backgrounds, yet come together each week because music continues to be an important part of their lives.
NOCB isn't simply a place to occasionally pick up an instrument. Members rehearse each Thursday throughout the school year and perform challenging repertoire ranging from concert band classics to works by modern composers. The goal is to continue growing as individual musicians while creating something together that can ultimately be shared with an audience.
That opportunity to keep growing is part of what makes community music so special. There is always a new piece to learn, another technique to refine, and another performance to prepare for. Even musicians with decades of experience can continue discovering something new.
Music doesn't have an expiration date. Whether you've played for most of your life or simply appreciate hearing others perform, there is always room for music to remain part of the journey.
