Never been to a concert band performance before? You don't need to know the difference between a euphonium and a bassoon—or recognize a single piece on the program—to enjoy one.

An NOCB concert brings together approximately 80 musicians across the woodwind, brass, and percussion sections to create a full symphonic sound. Under the direction of longtime Music Director Annette Kline, the band performs a broad variety of music, so no two programs are quite the same.

During a single season, audiences might hear a traditional march, a classical transcription, a contemporary work composed specifically for concert band, music from a favorite film or musical, or selections influenced by jazz and popular music. Recent NOCB programs have included everything from Holst's Jupiter and Rossini's William Tell Overture to music from Superman and How to Train Your Dragon.

Some performances also feature guest musicians, vocalists, small ensembles, or talented young musicians selected through NOCB's Concerto Competition. During the summer, the experience becomes even more relaxed as the band takes its music outdoors for community concerts, including performances at Lake Orion's Wildwood Amphitheater.

Most importantly, there's no special knowledge required to be part of the audience. Come in, find a seat, and enjoy hearing what dozens of musicians can create together. You may recognize an old favorite, discover something completely new, or leave with a greater appreciation for the sound of a live concert band.
